The debate around what type of government we should have almost always focuses on the size of a government. Should it be big? Should it be small? But why start with that question? Shouldn’t we ask what a good government should look like first, and then from there figure out the size of government? So then, what should a good government look like? The GOP and their “Tax Cuts”
In recent weeks the GOP has been calling for extensive tax cuts, and rightly so. With the U.S. deficit exceeding 14 trillion dollars, the United States needs to take actions to reduce the deficit and ween itself off of loans. Yet last week several members of Congress, including prominent GOP Rep and budget hawk, John Kline, has vowed to the “For-Profit” education from cuts in federally backed students loans. These “For-Profit” institutions are notorious for producing low quality degrees and charging absurd prices. Graduates of these programs often have difficulty finding employment and default rates are nearly twice as high at “For-Profit” Schools. Interestingly the For-Profit college sector has spent millions on lobbying, including a 100,000 dollar campaign contribution to Senator Kine. This is a clear example of the American government being bought and paid for by a small group of wealthy, and powerful, lobbyists. Student loans should only be federally backed when a student attends a high quality and reputable school and tax-payer backed loans should be capped to the cost of in-state public tuition.
